Online Therapy FAQs: What You Need to Know

Is Online Therapy just like In-person Therapy?

Yes and No. Online therapy offers several benefits, including convenience, flexibility, and accessibility. You can attend sessions from anywhere, which is especially helpful if you have a busy schedule, live in a remote area, or prefer the comfort of your own home. It also removes the need for travel time, making it easier to fit therapy into your routine. Many people find that online therapy offers the same depth of connection with their therapist as in-person sessions, with the added bonus of being more adaptable to their needs.

What happens in our therapy session?

During a therapy session, you'll meet in a safe and confidential environment. Our session typically lasts about 55 minutes. You’ll talk about your feelings, challenges, and any issues you want to address. I will listen, ask questions, and provide insights or techniques to help you process your emotions and develop coping strategies. Therapy is collaborative, meaning we’ll work together to set goals and find solutions that work for you.

How long does therapy take?

The length of our time together varies from person to person, depending on the nature of the issues you're addressing and your individual goals. Some folks feel much improved after just a few months, while others prefer we embark on longer-term therapy, to process deeper and more complex concerns.

Think of therapy like a season. I recommend starting with weekly or biweekly sessions and committing to yourself for 3 months of focused energy. I will regularly check in with you to evaluate progress and adjust our approach as needed. Ultimately, therapy is a personalized journey, so there’s no set timeline.

Do you see men or non-binary clients?

Absolutely! While my practice focuses on supporting women, I’m more than happy to welcome men and non-binary folks to the couch—or the Zoom screen! Self-compassion, personal growth, and navigating life’s chaos aren’t exclusive to any gender.

Think of it like this: my specialty is women, but much like a great pizza place, just because they’re famous for margherita doesn’t mean they can’t whip up an amazing pepperoni or veggie supreme. So, if you feel like my approach resonates with you, come on in! Therapy is a space for *you*, regardless of how you identify. If you’re unsure, let’s chat.

Do you take insurance?

Great question! I accept Aetna Commercial plans. Beyond that, my practice is fully out-of-pocket, which means I don’t bill insurance directly. How does this work—you pay upfront for your session and then, if your insurance offers out-of-network benefits, you can submit a receipt (called a superbill) for reimbursement.

I know, insurance can feel like a maze wrapped in red tape, but I’m happy to help you navigate it! If you’re not sure about your out-of-network benefits, we can check using Mentaya or you can give your insurance company a call and ask things like:

“Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?”

“What’s my reimbursement rate?”

“Do I need a deductible to be met first?”

Many clients find that the flexibility of out-of-pocket therapy is worth it—no one but us decides what’s best for your care. Plus, you avoid the “middleman effect,” which can sometimes limit options or privacy. Some insurance plans reimburse up to 60-80% of session costs.

If you have more questions about the financial side of things, let’s chat! Therapy is an investment in you, and I want you to feel good about the process—every step of the way. Good Faith Estimate.
